What is Waste and Recycling Insurance?

Waste and Recycling Insurance for UK Businesses

The waste and recycling sector is one of the most operationally complex industries in the UK, with businesses facing a wide range of regulatory, environmental and safety-related risks. From staff operating heavy machinery and vehicles to the handling and processing of hazardous or controlled waste, having the right waste and recycling insurance in place is essential to protect your people, your operations and your reputation.

At Creative Insurance, we understand that no two waste management or recycling businesses face the same exposures. Risks can vary significantly depending on the type of materials handled, collection methods, processing activities and site locations. That’s why a carefully structured insurance policy is crucial - helping to protect against unexpected claims, enforcement action or costly legal disputes.

Our experienced team works closely with waste and recycling operators across the UK to identify the most relevant areas of risk and ensure appropriate cover is in place. Whether you are concerned about employer’s liability, public liability, environmental impairment, plant and machinery or vehicle-related risks, we help ensure your insurance aligns with how your business actually operates.

From small, local waste collection services working within residential areas to large-scale commercial and industrial recycling operations, Creative Waste Solutions supports businesses of all sizes with tailored insurance solutions designed to meet the demands of the waste and recycling industry.

What does Waste and Recycling Insurance cover?

Insurance with CWS can include:

1

BUSINESS INTERRUPTION INSURANCE

Should disaster strike – a fire, a flood, or an explosion – and you can’t trade, business interruption insurance will provide an income until you can get to your previous trading level.

EMPLOYERS' LIABILITY INSURANCE (EL INSURANCE)

EL – is a legal requirement if you have any staff, full-time, part-time or contracted. EL insurance protects employers’ from compensation claims from their employees should a claim be made against them for loss or injury at work. Your policy must have a minimum of £5m cover, with £10m being the industry standard.

2

3

ENVIRONMENTAL IMPAIRMENT LIABILITY

Naturally, when working with waste and recycling materials there is a risk of contamination of your or a third parties’ environment. Environmental impairment liability can assist in covering costs involved when such incidents occur including clean up, claims for property damage, injuries, legal costs and even reputation management. These can potentially be factored into your policy to provide you with the correct level of protection.

4

MACHINERY & PLANT MACHINERY

Integral to any operation within this sector, your machinery is essential and as such must be considered when creating a policy. Common risk factors involved include accidents, theft and fire-related damage. The cover itself will need to fit your business’s operation, with contingencies available for machinery in transit, off-site storage, hired machinery as well as that which is permanently used on-site.

5

PUBLIC LIABILITY INSURANCE

If a member of the public is injured or their property damaged while on your premises, you can be held liable. Public liability insurance will protect you financially should you be sued for damages.

Waste & Recycling Insurance FAQs

Waste and Recycling Insurance can be complex, so to help you get the cover you need, here are the answers to our frequently asked questions.  We hope they’ll prove helpful, but if you’d like some advice that’s tailored to your business’s needs, please call us, request a callback or start your Waste and Recycling Insurance quote today.

Q. What insurance do you need for waste management?

You’ll likely need a combination of different insurance policies to be fully covered. Contact our dedicated team today and let us find a tailored package to suit your business needs.

Q. Is there anything not covered in a standard Waste & Recycling Insurance policy?

With a higher level of risk present than most industries, there are naturally some areas that a standard policy will often not account for. Whilst the majority of insurers will not account for these by default, if any of the below do factor into your operation our team are experienced in finding more suitable providers.

Some of the often excluded areas include:

  • Asbestos and lead-based paint

  • Nuclear-related hazards

  • Natural radioactive material

  • Underground storage tanks

For more information on our Waste and Recycling Insurance, simply contact the team.

Q. Do I need an environmental license?

Under the Environmental Permitting (England and Wales) Regulations 2016 permits are required to undertake a wide range of specified activities lawfully. These activities include anything from scrap metal yards, processing plants and asbestos contractors to nuclear power stations and sewage treatment plants. Depending on the activity, applicants must apply either to the Environment Agency or the relevant local authority.

You must ensure that you have appropriate authorisation for the activities your business carries out. It is advisable to do this at the early stages of setting up a business or planning stages to ensure there will be no opposition to the licence or restrictions imposed that may affect your ability to trade.
